Interview with Marc Grewe (Insidious Disease, Morgoth)

Insidious Disease is a super-band that released a super-album. Morgoth has left us too early and left the things somehow unfinished. The fact that they are resurrected in 2011 determined me to contact Marc Grewe for a little discussion on various topics. Check it out below.

Since you are more renowned for your activity with Morgoth (a band that has been recently resurrected), I hope you won’t mind me asking you a few things about the past, present and future of it, before delving into Insidious Disease and other subjects. So:

La Baza Gatului:Did the split-up of Morgoth have anything to do with the musical direction of Feel Sorry for the Fanatic, an album that took the metal community by storm?
Marc Grewe: It was part of the split, but not the main reason.

La Baza Gatului: Why did you choose that direction in the first place?
Marc Grewe:Because we developed as members in our own directions. It just was the music that came out of us to that time. We had also different thoughts about where the band should go to.

La Baza Gatului: After the split-up of Morgoth you had quite a few other musical collaborations, amongst them being Comecon and Power of Expression. What can you tell about those?
Marc Grewe: Both of them were great fun. Comecon was just a one term thing. They were a Swedish band that always used different vocalists. So it was just a studio project, where I just lent my vocals. POE was a collaboration of friends that I had from the well known German Hardcore Band URGE. I did quite some touring with them as well. Great guys and great music!

La Baza Gatului: I know that Morgoth is active again and has been already booked for some important summer festivals. Are you planning to stay or is it just a temporary resurrection? What are your plans (record label, album, DVD, concerts)?
Marc Grewe: So far it’s just planned to do these festivals.
We’ll see what happens afterwards...

La Baza Gatului: What have you done since 1995 until founding Insidious Disease? Was it hard for you to stay away from the metal scene?
Marc Grewe:I worked for Century Media, did my own Promotion Company and am now doing more movie video and Film productions...so I never lost track that much as I also played in some local projects called Action Jackson and Suicide By Cop.

La Baza Gatului: Since Insidious Disease is formed by many renowned musicians, one can wonder if it is a true band or only a project. What can you tell me on this matter?
Marc Grewe: Well, of course it’s no really possible to do extensive tours or so, but we also want to do more live shows and are currently working on new material which is already extremely promising and raw!

La Baza Gatului: What are, in your opinion, the strongest points of Shadowcast? What does it make it stand above the multitude of death metal albums on the market?
Marc Grewe: We are people from different kind of the Extremest music scenes, Death Metal, Black Metal and Grindcore, so all of us give this certain flavor of its own kind, which can’t be found with all these new kids that do the same stuff all over.

La Baza Gatului: If you would be a journalist, how would you rate it (on a scale from 0 to 10) and why?
Marc Grewe: I would give it 9...because you always have to get better with the next one hahah...

La Baza Gatului: Since the members of Insidious Disease come from different corners of Europe and have other bands and collaborations too, isn’t it hard for you to compose, rehearse and play live?
Marc Grewe: No, the internet makes it extremely easy, actually...

La Baza Gatului: Do you manage to make a living out of music or do you have to make some extra money from a regular (or part-time) job?
Marc Grewe: As I said before I am also working as a unit manager for Movie productions...

La Baza Gatului: Do you consider that the financial crisis everybody’s bragging about affected the metal scene too (record label, sales, concerts)?
Marc Grewe: Well, the Metal fans are really loyal and still support their bands, which is great...so the Metal scene doesn’t suffer as much as other genres...and that is what Metal makes so untamable by any others but the fans! It’s great!

La Baza Gatului: What are your musical future plans?
Marc Grewe: Well, playing these Morgoth shows and hope the people like it. Otherwise I hope that we will be ready to record another Insidious Disease album in the near future...and hopefully play a tour.

La Baza Gatului: Thanks for the opportunity of making this interview. The final words are yours.
Marc Grewe: Thanx for the Interview! See you in the PITS OF UTUMNO!!
